William Hare, 1st Earl of Listowel, was an important Irish nobleman and politician. Born in September 1751, he passed away on July 13, 1837. During his life, he held several titles, including Lord Ennismore and Viscount Ennismore and Listowel. He was also a Member of Parliament, meaning he helped create laws for Ireland.
William Hare's Life and Titles
William Hare was the second son of Richard Hare of Ennismore, located in County Kerry. His mother was Catherine, also known as Margaret, daughter of Samuel Maylor. William had an older brother named John, who sadly passed away in 1774 without marrying.
Political Career and New Titles
In 1796, William Hare was chosen to represent Cork City in the Irish House of Commons. This was a special group of people who made laws for Ireland at the time. He held this position until 1797.
Later, from 1798 until 1801, he represented Athy. This was just before the Act of Union, which joined Ireland and Great Britain.
In 1800, William Hare received a great honor. He was given the title Baron Ennismore in County Kerry. This meant he became a "peer" of Ireland, a special rank of nobility. He received this title on July 31, 1800.
His honors continued to grow. In January 1816, he was made Viscount Ennismore and Listowel. Then, on February 5, 1822, he received an even higher title: Earl of Listowel in County Kerry. These titles were all part of the Peerage of Ireland.
Family Life
Lord Listowel married twice during his life. His first wife was Mary Wrixon, the only daughter of Henry Wrixon of Ballygiblin, County Cork. They married in 1772. Mary passed away in 1810.
After Mary's death, William Hare married Anne Latham in 1812 or 1815. Anne was the second daughter of John Latham of Meldrum, County Tipperary.
William and his first wife, Mary, had several children:
- Richard Lysaght, Viscount Ennismore (1773–1827) married Catherine Dillon.
- William Henry (1782–1848) married Charlotte Baugh in 1806 and had children.
- Margaret Anne (died 1835) married Richard White, 1st Earl of Bantry in 1799.
- Mary (died 1841) married Charles Morley Balders in 1803.
- Louisa (died 1855) married John Bushe in 1817.
- Catherine (died 1864) married Richard Maunsell in 1808.
William Hare, the 1st Earl of Listowel, passed away on July 13, 1837, at the age of 85. His son, Richard Hare, Viscount Ennismore, had passed away before him. Because of this, William was succeeded in his titles by his grandson, William. Lady Listowel, his second wife, passed away later in 1859.
