William Herbert Hobbs was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. His parents were Horace and Mary Paine Hobbs. He was born on July 2, 1864. He loved learning and went to several universities. He studied at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree there in 1883. He then went to Johns Hopkins. He received his Ph.D. in 1888. He also studied in Germany at the University of Heidelberg from 1888 to 1889.

Career Highlights

Hobbs was a geologist who led four trips to Greenland. These trips helped us learn more about the Earth. He worked at the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 1889 to 1906. He also worked for the United States Geological Survey. In 1906, he became a Professor of Geology. He taught at the University of Michigan from 1906 to 1934. He was also the editor of the Journal of Geology starting in 1909.

She was born in 1899. She later became Mrs. Joseph Newhall Lincoln. William Herbert Hobbs died in Ann Arbor, Michigan on January 1, 1953. He was 88 years old.
