Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William Joseph Christie (1824–1899) was an important person in early Canadian history. He worked for the Hudson's Bay Company for many years. He also served as a politician on the Temporary North-West Council from 1872 to 1873.

Working with the Hudson's Bay Company

Christie worked for the Hudson's Bay Company for a long time. This job helped him build good relationships with Indigenous peoples. The Cree people especially trusted him. They would talk to him about their worries. They were concerned about the Canadian government and rumors of fighting.

Christie was a Métis man. Métis people have both Indigenous and European heritage. He spoke French and English, and maybe Cree too. In 1862, a man named Father Émile Petitot met Christie. Christie was then a high-ranking manager, called a chief factor, at Fort Edmonton. He told Father Petitot in French, "I am Métis myself. Many of us in the Company are Métis. Among the chief factors, there isn't a single Englishman." This shows how many Métis people worked in important roles.

His Role in Politics

On December 28, 1872, Christie was chosen to join the Temporary North-West Council. This was like an early government for the Northwest Territories. However, he did not stay on the council for long. He resigned less than a year later.

Christie also helped with important agreements called Treaties. He was a commissioner for the Treaty 4 negotiations at Fort Qu'Appelle in 1874. He also helped with the Treaty 6 negotiations in 1876. These took place at Fort Carlton and Fort Pitt.

In May 1875, the Canadian Pacific Railway rented Christie's home. They used his house in Selkirk, Manitoba as a telegraph office.

Christie's granddaughter, Edith Rogers, later became a politician herself. She served in the Manitoba Legislature.

His Legacy

Mount Christie is a mountain in Jasper National Park. It is located in the Canadian Rockies. This mountain was named after William Joseph Christie in 1859 by James Hector.
