William Mackey Wherry (September 13, 1836 – November 3, 1918) was an American soldier and author. He is best known for receiving the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award for bravery a soldier can get in the United States. Wherry served in the American Civil War and the Spanish–American War.

William M. Wherry: A Brave Soldier
William M. Wherry was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He spent many years serving in the United States Army. He fought in different conflicts, including on the American frontier. He also served during the Spanish–American War. Wherry eventually retired as a Brigadier General.
Heroism in the Civil War
During the American Civil War, William Wherry showed great courage. He was a First Lieutenant in the 3rd Missouri Volunteer Infantry. He also worked as an aide to General Nathaniel Lyon.
Medal of Honor Actions
On August 10, 1861, Wherry fought in the Battle of Wilson's Creek. He displayed amazing bravery during this battle. He helped to rally troops who were falling back under heavy enemy fire. For his actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. This prestigious award was given to him on October 30, 1895.
Later Military Career
After the Civil War ended, Wherry continued his military service. He was given the honorary rank of Brevet Colonel. He was stationed at the Headquarters of the First Military District in Richmond, Virginia.
Service in Other Conflicts
Wherry continued to rise through the ranks. He became a lieutenant colonel in the 2nd United States Infantry in 1894. When the Spanish–American War began, he took command of the 22nd Infantry Regiment. He later became a colonel of the 8th Infantry.
In 1898, Wherry was appointed a brigadier general of volunteers. He retired from the Regular Army as a brigadier general on January 18, 1899.
Author and Legacy
Besides his military career, William Wherry was also an author. He wrote a book titled "Lyon's Campaign in Missouri". This book shared his experiences and knowledge from the war.
Wherry passed away on November 3, 1918, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis. His bravery and service to his country are remembered.
