Early Life and Studies
William Richardson was born around 1572 in a small village called Wales in West Riding of Yorkshire, England.
When he was older, William decided to become a Catholic priest. This was a difficult choice because, at that time, the official religion in England was Protestantism. To study for the priesthood, he had to travel to Spain. He attended special schools for priests, called seminaries, in the cities of Valladolid and Seville.
Becoming a Priest
William Richardson finished his studies and became a priest sometime between 1594 and 1600. After his ordination, he was sent back to England.
Because it was dangerous to be a Catholic priest in England, William used a different name, or alias, to hide his true identity. He went by the name William Anderson to avoid being caught by the authorities.
Return to England and Arrest
Soon after William Richardson arrived back in England, he faced trouble. Someone he trusted betrayed him, meaning they told the authorities who he was.
He was arrested in London at a place called Gray's Inn, which was a famous legal area. After his arrest, he was put in prison.
Trial and Legacy
William Richardson's trial happened very quickly, and he was found guilty within a week. He was sentenced to death for being a Catholic priest in England. He was executed on February 27, 1603, at Tyburn in London.
William Richardson was the last person to be put to death for their faith during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The queen herself died less than a month after his execution.
Today, William Richardson is honored by the Catholic Church. His feast day, a special day of remembrance, is celebrated every year on February 27. He was officially recognized as "Blessed" by Pope Pius XI on December 15, 1929.
