William Westerhold (born January 21, 1836 – died May 12, 1910) was a brave soldier who fought for the United States during the American Civil War. He was a sergeant in the United States Army. He is famous for receiving the Medal of Honor, which is the highest award a soldier can get in the U.S. military. He earned this special award for his amazing courage during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House on May 12, 1864.

William Westerhold's Military Service

William Westerhold was born in a place called Prussia, which is now part of Germany. He moved to the United States and joined the Army from New York City in October 1861. He became a soldier in the 52nd New York Infantry regiment.

A Heroic Act at Spotsylvania

On May 12, 1864, William Westerhold showed incredible bravery during a big battle. This battle was called the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, and it happened in Spotsylvania, Virginia. During the fight, he risked his own life to capture the flag of a Confederate Army regiment. The flag belonged to the 23rd Virginia Infantry. Capturing an enemy's flag was a very important and dangerous act during the war. It showed great courage and often helped boost the morale of one's own side.

Receiving the Medal of Honor

For his amazing bravery and for capturing the enemy flag, William Westerhold was awarded the Medal of Honor. This is the highest military award given by the United States government. A few days after his heroic action, he was promoted to an officer. He continued to serve in the Army until July 1865, when his regiment finished its service.
