Williams is a small community in Josephine County, Oregon, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city. It is also a census-designated place (CDP), which is an area the U.S. Census Bureau defines for gathering population data. In 2020, about 1,102 people lived there.

The area around Williams had a few different post offices. They were all named because they were close to Williams Creek. This creek flows into the Applegate River. It was named after Captain Robert Williams. He was a soldier who fought near the creek during the Rogue River Wars in the mid-1850s. The Williams post office opened in 1881. The community is served by the Three Rivers School District, and Williams Elementary School is right in town.

Geography of Williams

Williams is located in the southeastern part of Josephine County. It sits in the valley of Williams Creek. This creek flows north into the Applegate River. The Applegate River is part of the larger Rogue River system.

The community is northeast of the Siskiyou Mountains. It is about 6 miles (9.7 km) south of a place called Provolt. It is also about 19 miles (31 km) south of Grants Pass. Grants Pass is the main city and county seat for Josephine County. The Williams area covers about 11.3 square miles (29.3 square kilometers) of land.

Famous People from Williams

  • Steve Miller is a well-known musician. From 1976 to 1986, he owned a large ranch here. It included the historic Lippincott-Wagner House. In 2015, this house was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.
