Discover Williamsburg's Past
Williamsburg was started in 1856 by Richard Williams, an immigrant from Wales. In 1860, the town wanted a post office. Homer Paige became the postmaster. He named the post office Stellalopolis, after his youngest daughter Stella. This name helped tell it apart from nearby Millersburg.
Later, in the 1870s, people tried to change the town's name to Chester. Old documents from that time sometimes call it "Chester, formerly Williamsburg." But in 1885, the name disputes ended. The town officially became Williamsburg. This happened after the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad came through. The railroad helped the town grow a lot.
