History of Willow Island

How Willow Island Got Its Name

Willow Island was first settled and mapped out in the 1880s. The community was named after a nearby island in a river. This island had many willow trees growing on it.

For a while, people used two different names for the community: "Willow" and "Willow Island." To clear up any confusion, the United States Board on Geographic Names decided in 1902 that the official name would be "Willow Island."

Post Office Services

A post office was opened in Willow Island in 1874. This allowed people living in the area to send and receive mail. The post office served the community for many years until it closed down in 1991.
