Early Life and Education
Wim Crouwel studied Fine Arts from 1947 to 1949. He went to Academie Minerva in Groningen, Netherlands. After art school, he spent two years in the military.
When he finished his military service, he got a job in Amsterdam. He worked for a company that created exhibitions. Crouwel later said that his art training did not teach him about typography. He learned about it by taking night classes. These classes were at what is now the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.
Designing a Career
Crouwel started his design career in 1955. He created designs for exhibitions, graphics, and products. He worked with another designer named Kho Liang Ie.
In 1963, he helped start a design studio called Total Design. Today, this company is known as Total Identity. From 1964, Crouwel was in charge of designing posters, catalogs, and exhibitions. He did this for the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
Creating New Typefaces
In 1967, Wim Crouwel designed a special typeface called New Alphabet. This design was made for early computer screens. These screens could only show straight lines, either horizontal or vertical. So, his font used only these types of lines.
Other fonts he created include Fodor and Gridnik.
Other Famous Designs
In 1970, Crouwel designed the Dutch building for Expo '70 in Osaka, Japan. He also designed the Number Postage Stamps for the Dutch PTT. These stamps were used in the Netherlands from 1976 to 2002.
While at Total Design, Crouwel made many geometric logos. One famous logo he designed was for the Dutch Rabobank in 1973. The letters in this logo were shaped so they could be used as a 3D light-up sign. After the 3D design was finished, he made a flat 2D version for printing.
New Alphabet in Pop Culture
Wim Crouwel once said that his New Alphabet font was "over-the-top." He meant it was extreme and not really meant for everyday use. It was quite hard to read! However, this font became popular again in 1988. Designer Brett Wickens used a version of it. He put it on the album cover for Substance by the band Joy Division.
Teaching and Leadership
Besides his design work, Wim Crouwel was also a teacher. In the 1950s, he taught at the Royal Academy for Art and Design. He also taught at the school that later became the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
From 1965 to 1985, he worked with the industrial design department. This was at the Delft University of Technology. Later, from 1987 to 1993, he was a special professor. He taught about History, Arts, and Culture Studies at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.
From 1985 to 1993, he was the director of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
Crouwel's graphic work is well-known and respected. He often used grid-based layouts. His typography was based on the International Typographic Style. This style uses clean lines and clear organization.
