Window Rock High School is a public high school located in Fort Defiance, Arizona. Fort Defiance is a community in Apache County, Arizona. This school is the only high school in the Window Rock Unified School District.
The school district, and therefore the high school, serves several communities. These include Fort Defiance, Oak Springs, St. Michaels, Window Rock, and most of Sawmill.
School History
The school district first opened in the mid-1950s. High school students started attending two years later. The very first students graduated in 1958 and 1959. The school building itself was finished in 1960.
Sadly, a big fire completely destroyed the school in April 1981. This fire caused about $5 million in damage. A brand new school building was constructed later in that same decade.
Who Goes to Window Rock High School?
On October 1, 2010, Window Rock High School had 728 students. Almost all of the students, about 99%, are of Navajo background. The school welcomes students from many nearby areas. These areas include Fort Defiance, St. Michaels, Sawmill, Hunters Point, and Oak Springs.
Sports and Teams
The school's sports teams are known as the "Fighting Scouts." They are part of the Arizona Interscholastic Association's 3A Conference. The basketball program was once led by a well-known coach named Raul Mendoza.
Famous Graduates
Many talented people have graduated from Window Rock High School. Here are a couple of them:
