Wingfield is a suburb located just north of Adelaide, a big city in South Australia. It sits between two important roads: the Port River Expressway to the north and Grand Junction Road to the south.
Wingfield is next to Dry Creek on its north and east sides. It also has railway lines like the Gawler railway line and Adelaide-Port Augusta railway line nearby. The North-South Motorway and another railway line, the Dry Creek-Port Adelaide railway line, both run through the suburb.
Wingfield got its name from R. W. Wingfield. He was the private secretary to William Jervois, who was the Governor of South Australia a long time ago.
What Wingfield Does
Most of Wingfield is used for businesses and factories. Only a small part, in the southwest, has houses where people live. The main activities here include recycling, making products, and moving goods around.
Recycling and Waste Management
Wingfield is home to a very large recycling and waste center. It's called the Wingfield Waste & Recycling Centre. People often call it the Wingfield Tip or Wingfield Dump.
This big area is about 94 hectares, which is like 94 football fields! For many years, from 1952 to 2004, it was a place where all trash was buried. But since 2004, it has changed. Now, it's a place where waste is sorted. Things that can be recycled are separated from the rest.
The waste that cannot be recycled is pressed down very tightly. Then, it is sent to other special landfill sites. These sites are located further north of Adelaide, in places like Dublin and Inkerman. Several companies work together at this center to manage waste and recycling.
Motorsport Fun
Wingfield is also a special place for young motorcycle riders. It has Australia's only track just for junior Motorcycle speedway racing. This track is called the Sidewinders Speedway.
You can find the Sidewinders Speedway at the Wingfield Reserve. It's on Eighth Street, right next to the recycling center. The track is 112 meters long. The Sidewinders U/16 Speedway Club opened it in 1978. This club was started in 1976 to help young riders.
