The Winona station is a historic train station located in Winona, Minnesota. It was once known as the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway Station. Today, it serves as a stop for Amtrak's daily Empire Builder train service.

This station was first built in 1888 by a company called the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. This company was later known as the Milwaukee Road. There was also an old building nearby that the Milwaukee Road used for storing freight.

The station was designed by an architect named John T. W. Jennings. In 2013, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site because of its role in transportation. The station shows how train travel grew in Minnesota, with Winona being a major center for trains.

Train Stations in Winona's Past

Winona has been an important place for trains for a long time. Besides the current station, there were other train stations in the area.

The Chicago and North Western Depot

Winona also had another train station called the Chicago and North Western Railroad depot. This station was located at 2nd and Huff streets. It was a two-story brick building with a unique style.

It was built in the late 1880s for the Winona and St. Peter Railroad. This station was near where the Winona Rail Bridge crossed the Mississippi River. Sadly, this depot was torn down in 1980.

The tearing down of this old depot made people in Winona want to save other historic buildings. So, the Winona Heritage Association worked with the Milwaukee Road company to help fix up the station that still stands today. The Milwaukee Road company had put off repairs on the Winona station for a while. This meant the station was in bad shape and might have been torn down too.

Winona Junction Station

Another important station was the Winona Junction station. This station was located across the Mississippi River in Buffalo, Buffalo County, Wisconsin. It was on a different train line, which is now called the BNSF Northern Transcon line.

Because this station was on the other side of the Main Channel Bridge from downtown Winona, special "Burlington Bus" service was offered. This bus helped people get from the station to the city. There was also another station called East Winona further down the same track.
