When Was the Red Wing Station Built?
The Red Wing train station was first built in 1905. It was constructed by a company called the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, also known as the Milwaukee Road.
The station building is not just for trains. It also has the Red Wing Visitor and Convention Bureau. This is a place where tourists can get information about the area. There is also an arts gallery inside.
A special plaque on the building shares some history. It says that building started in 1904. This happened after the city of Red Wing made a deal with the railroad. The city gave the railroad some land for tracks. In return, the railroad built the depot and gave money for Levee Park.
The building was designed by the railroad's architect, J.M. Nettenstrom. He used a style called neoclassical revival. This style was popular after the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition. The station is an important part of the Red Wing Mall Historic District. This district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
