Cannon Falls is a city in Goodhue County, Minnesota. In 2020, about 4,220 people lived there. It's located southeast of the Twin Cities. Cannon Falls is famous for Pachyderm Studios, where many well-known bands, like Nirvana, recorded music. Nirvana even recorded their 1993 album In Utero there.
The city gets its name from the beautiful waterfalls on the Cannon River. It's also the starting point for the Cannon Valley Trail, a popular path for biking and walking.

History of Cannon Falls
The first person to settle in this area was Edway Stoughton. Later, Charles Parks settled the land that is now Cannon Falls in July 1854. The village of Cannon Falls was planned in 1855 by Richard and William Freeborn and county surveyor S. A. Hart.
The village officially became a town on March 10, 1857. A post office was set up in 1855, first called Cannon River Falls. Its name was shortened to Cannon Falls in 1889. In 1905, Cannon Falls officially became a city.
The area had a lot of water power from the Big and Little Cannon Rivers. This attracted many factories and businesses. The first flour mill was built in 1857. Other factories, like a wool mill and a grist mill, also used the river's power starting in 1861.
Geography and Nature
Cannon Falls covers about 4.45 square miles (11.53 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water. Major roads like U.S. Highway 52 and State Highways 19 and 20 pass through the city.
Just west of town, you'll find Lake Byllesby. This lake is a reservoir of the Cannon River, which is a great spot for outdoor activities.

In 2010, there were 4,083 people living in Cannon Falls. There were 1,708 households, which are groups of people living together. About 1,061 of these were families. The city had about 938 people per square mile.
Most of the people living in Cannon Falls were White (94.3%). There were also smaller groups of African American (2.4%), Native American (0.5%), and Asian (0.5%) residents. About 2.2% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

Education in Cannon Falls
The public school district in Cannon Falls was started in 1893. It includes Cannon Falls High School, Cannon Falls Middle School, and Cannon Falls Elementary School.

The high school and middle school are located on the same campus. In the 2017-2018 school year, about 750 students were in grades 6 through 12. As of 2023, Tim Hodges is the principal, and Jeff Sampson is the district superintendent.

St. Paul's Lutheran School is a private Christian school in Cannon Falls. It offers pre-school and K-8 education. It is part of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS).
Places of Worship
St. Paul's Lutheran Church is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) in Cannon Falls. The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer is a historic building. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important place in history.
Famous People from Cannon Falls
- Colonel William J. Colvill was a hero from the Battle of Gettysburg. He is buried in the Cannon Falls Cemetery.
- American singer-songwriter Caitlyn Smith was born in Cannon Falls on June 13, 1986.
