History of Winston, Missouri

Winston-depot
The old Rock Island Railroad depot in Winston. A famous story says it was involved in an event with the James-Younger Gang.

Winston started out with a different name! When the railroad was built through the area in 1871, it was first called Crofton's Depot. This was a busy spot where trains would stop.

Over time, the village's name changed a few times. It was also known as "Winstonville" and "Emporia." The name "Winston" came from F. K. Winston, who was an important official for the railroad.

A post office opened in 1872 under the name Winstonville. It changed to Emporia in 1879, and then finally became Winston in 1885. The old railroad depot in Winston has a famous story connected to the James-Younger Gang, a group known for their daring actions in the Old West.
