Winston Guno Lackin (born December 23, 1954 – died November 11, 2019) was an important politician from Suriname. He served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Suriname. This means he was in charge of how Suriname worked with other countries around the world. He held this job from August 2010 to August 2015, working in the government led by President Dési Bouterse.

Early Life and Education

Winston Lackin was born in the Nickerie District of Suriname on December 23, 1954. He went to high school in Paramaribo, which is the capital city of Suriname.

After high school, he studied law at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname. To prepare for a job working with other countries (called diplomacy), he also studied in Brazil at the Rio Branco Institute from 1984 to 1986.

A Career in Diplomacy

Mr. Lackin spent many years working for his country's government. From 1983 to 1984, he was the head of the Europe department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This department handled Suriname's relationships with countries in Europe.

He continued to work at the Ministry until 1991. Then, he became a first secretary at the Surinamese embassy in Brasília, Brazil. An embassy is like an office for a country in another country. He worked there until 1994, when he returned to his job at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Suriname.

In 1997, he traveled abroad again. He became a counselor at the Surinamese embassy in Brussels, Belgium. He came back to Suriname in 2000 and continued to work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Becoming a Minister

On August 13, 2010, Winston Lackin was chosen to be the Minister of Foreign Affairs. This was a very important role in President Dési Bouterse's government. He worked hard in this position for five years. On August 13, 2015, he passed his role as Minister to Niermala Badrising.

Key Policies and International Relations

As Minister of Foreign Affairs, Winston Lackin worked to improve Suriname's relationships with other countries.

Connecting Regions

In 2012, Suriname was in charge of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Mr. Lackin worked to make Suriname a link between CARICOM and the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR). He wanted these two groups of countries to work together more closely.

Improving Ties with the Netherlands

In January 2013, Mr. Lackin met with the Dutch Minister, Frans Timmermans. This was the first time ministers from Suriname and the Netherlands had met since 2010.

By late 2014 and early 2015, the relationship between Suriname and the Netherlands got much better. Both countries sent ambassadors to each other again. Mr. Lackin said that their relationship was fully restored.

Personal Life and Legacy

Winston Lackin had interests outside of politics too. From 1985 to 1987, he was a drummer for a Brazilian music group called Obina Shok.

Winston Lackin passed away at his home in Suriname on November 11, 2019, at the age of 64. He is remembered for his work in strengthening Suriname's connections with the rest of the world.
