Exploring Winterfold Forest

Winterfold Forest is a large woodland area. Part of it is known as Hurt Wood. This section is found in the bigger parish of Shere. It's close to small villages like Peaslake and other tiny settlements, which are often called "hamlets".

What's the Land Like?

The forest has many paths for walking and riding horses. You'll also find springs here, which are the starting points for streams like Cranleigh Waters. The soil in Winterfold Forest is mostly "Greensand." This type of soil is a form of sandstone that lets water pass through it easily. Underneath, there's often a layer of gravel and flint stones, followed by clay.

Where the soil is very sandy, you'll mostly see pine trees, gorse (a spiky bush with yellow flowers), bracken (a type of fern), other ferns, and many kinds of fungi.

High Points in the Forest

Winterfold Forest is home to some of the highest spots in Surrey! Two of these are Pitch Hill and The Warren. Pitch Hill is 257 metres (about 843 feet) above sea level, and The Warren is 251 metres (about 823 feet) high. These hills are in the highest and most wooded part of the Ewhurst area.

Nearby Villages

The closest villages to Winterfold Forest, besides the small homes and cottages right in the woods, are Farley Green and Ewhurst.
