About the Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum

How the Museum Started

Volunteers built this museum in an old building. It used to be called the Baker Grain Elevator. The city of Spooner also helped with money to build it. The museum first opened its doors in May 2010.

What You'll See Inside

The museum has a main display area called the Exhibit Hall. Here, you can see many different canoes. You will also find cool items related to canoeing. Some canoes are from a time when they were very popular. Others are new canoes made by builders today.

You can learn about how canoes were built in different places. This includes the East Coast, the Midwest, and Canada.

The Canoe Shop

The museum also has a big Canoe Shop. It is about 2,500 square feet (232 square meters) in size. This shop is a place where people can learn how to build and fix canoes. It helps keep these important skills alive for the future.

Other Cool Canoe Museums

The biggest museum just for canoes is the Canadian Canoe Museum. It is located in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

Other museums in the U.S. also have canoes in their collections. These include the Thousand Islands Museum in Clayton, New York. The Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut, also has canoes. Another one is the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, New York.
