Delicious Deli Food
Wise Sons serves many tasty foods from Jewish cuisine. Some popular items include pastrami, bagels, corned beef, and Reuben sandwiches. They make classic deli dishes that many people love.
How Wise Sons Started
Early Years (2002-2015)
Wise Sons Jewish Delicatessen was started by brothers Evan and Ari Bloom. Their friend Leo Beckerman also helped. They opened their first shop in 2011. It was located on 22nd and Mission Street in the Mission District of San Francisco, California.
Challenges and Growth (2015-2020)
On January 27, 2015, a fire happened at their main location on Mission Street. This building also held their big kitchen where food was prepared for other Wise Sons shops. The fire caused a lot of damage. It destroyed homes and other businesses nearby.
Because of the fire, Wise Sons had to find new ways to make their food. They used their other locations to smoke meats and bake bread. This helped them keep serving their customers.
In the spring of 2020, business became harder because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people stayed home, and their catering business slowed down. One of their bagel shops also closed permanently that year.
New Shops and Changes (2020-2024)
In September 2020, Wise Sons bought another bagel shop called Beauty's Bagels in Oakland. This shop still uses the Beauty's name and is part of the Wise Sons family.
In August 2021, Wise Sons opened a new location in Culver City, Los Angeles. This was their first shop in Southern California. However, this location closed in 2023.
Focusing on Local (2024-Present)
In 2024, Wise Sons decided to focus more on their shops in San Francisco and Oakland. They closed a few locations, including the one at the Contemporary Jewish Museum and another in Uptown Oakland.
In October 2024, Wise Sons opened a new shop inside the JCC of San Francisco. This location brings their delicious Jewish food to a central place for the Jewish community in San Francisco.
The Wise Sons Cookbook
In 2020, Evan Bloom worked with Rachel Levin, Maren Caruso, and George McCallam to create a cookbook. It's called Eat Something: A Wise Sons Cookbook for Jews Who Like Food and Food Lovers Who Like Jews. The book shares Wise Sons' recipes and mixes them with classic Jewish dishes. It also talks about the cultural traditions that go with the food.
