History of Wise Township
Wise Township was officially created on January 24, 1872. It was named after George Wise, who was one of the very first people to settle in the area, especially in the community of Loomis.
When it was first established, Wise Township was much larger. It covered two big areas, each about 36 square miles, in the northeast part of Isabella County. You can see these original borders on old maps from 1873. However, in 1876, the southern half of Wise Township became its own separate area called Denver Township.
Geography and Location
Wise Township covers a total area of about 36.59 square miles (94.77 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 36.50 square miles (94.53 square kilometers), is land. A very small part, about 0.09 square miles (0.23 square kilometers), is water.
A popular path called the Pere Marquette Rail-Trail goes through the township. This trail is great for walking, running, or biking. Also, the entire township is located within the boundaries of the Isabella Indian Reservation.
Main Roads in Wise Township
Two important highways pass through or near Wise Township:
- US 10: This major road runs from east to west along the northern edge of the township.
- US-Bus 10 (Clare): This is a smaller business route that briefly enters the northwest corner of the township. It connects to the main US 10 highway.
Who Lives in Wise Township?
Based on information from the year 2000, there were 1,301 people living in Wise Township. These people lived in 464 households, and 360 of these were families. The township had about 35.5 people per square mile.
Most of the people in the township were White (93.62%). There were also Native American residents (4.38%), and smaller numbers of African American and Asian residents. Some people identified as being from two or more races. About 1.54% of the population was of Hispanic or Latino background.

Students in Wise Township attend schools from three different public school districts:
- Clare Public Schools: This district serves the northern part of the township. Its main schools are located in the city of Clare.
- Coleman Community School District: This district serves the southeast part of the township. Its schools are in the city of Coleman, which is in Midland County.
- Mount Pleasant Public Schools: A small area in the southwest corner of the township is served by this district. Its schools are located further south in the city of Mount Pleasant.
