Wolfgang Staudte (born Georg Friedrich Staudte) was an important German film director, script writer, and actor. He was born in Saarbrücken on October 9, 1906. He passed away on January 19, 1984.
After World War II ended in 1945, Staudte used his films to explore Germany's role in the war. He was one of the few German directors who kept making artistic films after 1945. His movies were known for being politically aware. They also showed great skill in filmmaking. Staudte's films offered good entertainment with a message about society.
His most important work happened in the ten years after World War II. During this time, he worked with the DEFA film studio in East Germany. A main goal of his films was to show the problems with too much German national pride. He made strong anti-Nazi films, like Murderers Among Us (1946). Making these films also helped him deal with his own past. He had acted in an anti-Semitic (anti-Jewish) film called Jud Süß during the Nazi era.
After 1956, Wolfgang Staudte worked in West Germany. By the 1970s, his film style was not seen as modern anymore. So, he started working more in television. He appeared on popular TV shows like Der Kommissar and Tatort.
Wolfgang Staudte is the great-uncle of the German-Iranian director and writer Andy Siege.
