Woombah is a small village located in the Clarence Valley area of New South Wales, Australia. It's a growing community surrounded by bushland. This village is found south of the World Heritage-listed Bundjalung National Park. It is also close to the Port of Yamba on Goodwood Island, and about 15 minutes from the fishing village of Iluka, New South Wales.

Woombah's Past: A Brief History

Woombah is home to an important Aboriginal site. It is one of five such sites in the Lower Clarence area. The North Arm of the Clarence River acts as a border here. To the north lived the Bundjalung people, and to the south were the Yaygir people.

The first Europeans came to Woombah in 1830. They started a timber business, using the local trees.

What Does "Woombah" Mean?

The name "Woombah" comes from an Aboriginal word. The Euahlayi people, who live in northern New South Wales, used the word womba. This word refers to the star Canopus, and it means "Mad Star" or "crazy star". Most people agree that Woombah means 'crazy star'.

Woombah is about 650 kilometers (400 miles) north of Sydney, Australia. It is also 260 kilometers (160 miles) south of Brisbane, Australia. The village is near Australia's South Pacific Coastline. It sits within the Clarence Valley, in an area known as the Northern Rivers of NSW. Woombah is close to where the Clarence River meets the ocean. It is about 26 meters (86 feet) above sea level.
