Workshop facts for kids
A workshop is a special place, like a room or a building, where people make or fix things. It has all the tools and machines needed for the job. Before big factories existed, workshops were the main places where goods were made. This was especially true during the Industrial Revolution, a time when new machines changed how things were produced.
Today, many homes in Western countries have a workshop. You might find one in a garage, a basement, or even a small shed outside. These home workshops usually have a workbench, along with different hand tools and power tools. People use them to fix broken items, but also to experiment and create new things, like making prototypes of inventions.
Workshops can focus on many different activities. Some are just for fixing cars or restoring old vehicles. Others specialize in working with wood, metal, or electronics. These are some of the most common types of workshops you might find.
Specialized Repair Workshops
In some industries, like those that repair trains or airplanes, there are very specialized workshops. These are often called back shops or railway workshops. They handle big, complex repairs that need special equipment and a lot of space. Most smaller repairs, however, are done in regular workshops.
