The World Nuclear Association (WNA) is a group that supports and promotes nuclear power around the world. It helps companies involved in the nuclear industry. These companies do many things, like digging for uranium (a special rock), turning it into fuel, making nuclear fuel for power plants, and even handling used fuel safely. They also help create electricity using nuclear energy.
WNA members are responsible for 70% of the world's nuclear power. They also produce most of the world's uranium and enriched uranium. The Association works to help its members share ideas and information. It also aims to help people better understand nuclear technology. The WNA was started in 2001. It grew out of an older group called the Uranium Institute, which began in 1975.

Who Can Join the WNA?
The World Nuclear Association is always growing its membership. Many new members come from countries outside the OECD. These are places where nuclear power is already used or is being considered. WNA members are found in 44 different countries. These countries are home to 80% of the world's population.
Companies that want to join pay a yearly fee. This fee depends on how big the company is. The WNA's office in London decides the fee using set rules. Companies in non-OECD countries often get a big discount on their fees.
Groups focused on learning, research, or rules can also join. They pay a lower fee. You can find a list of all current members on the World Nuclear Association website.
WNA's Rules for Good Conduct
The World Nuclear Association has a special set of rules called the Charter of Ethics. This charter helps all member organizations agree on important values. It explains the nuclear industry's duties. It also covers the international rules and laws that help make nuclear energy safe and peaceful. This idea comes from U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower's vision of 'Atoms for Peace'.
Who Leads the WNA?
WNA members choose a Director General and elect a board of 20 people. The current Director General is Sama Bilbao y León. The Chairman of the board is H.E. Mohamed Al Hammadi. He is also the Managing Director and CEO of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation. The Vice Chairman is Philippe Knoche, CEO at Orano. The board helps manage the organization and sets its goals. These goals must be approved by all members.
What the WNA Does
Helping the Industry Work Together
A key part of the World Nuclear Association's job is to help its members work together. This helps them in their business.
The WNA has ongoing Working Groups. These groups include members and staff. They share information and study different topics. These topics include:
- Working together on reactor design and safety checks.
- Keeping people safe from radiation (Radiological protection).
- Understanding the costs of nuclear power plants.
- Rules and laws about nuclear energy (Nuclear law).
- How materials are supplied.
- Moving radioactive materials safely.
- Managing waste and taking apart old plants (decommissioning).
- Making power plants work as well as possible.
- Setting standards for uranium mining.
- Managing risks when building things.
- Keeping the nuclear fuel cycle safe.
- Studying the fuel market.
When members meet, they are careful not to discuss prices or other things that could stop fair competition. They do not talk about specific contract details or prices for products. They also avoid talking about who should get certain customers. This helps keep the nuclear industry fair for everyone.
WNA Meetings
The World Nuclear Association holds an annual Symposium in London. This event brings together speakers from the nuclear industry. The Association has also given out an award for great contributions to using nuclear energy peacefully worldwide.
The WNA also works with the Nuclear Energy Institute. They hold annual World Nuclear Fuel Cycle meetings. These meetings are for people in the industry who deal with nuclear fuel supply, especially the uranium market.
Representing the Industry
The World Nuclear Association speaks for the international nuclear industry. It represents them at important global meetings, such as:
- Advisory groups for the International Atomic Energy Agency and Nuclear Energy Agency. These groups discuss transport and nuclear safety.
- United Nations meetings about sustainable development and climate change. The Association attended climate change talks in Copenhagen (2009) and COP26 (2021).
- Discussions by the International Commission on Radiological Protection and OSPAR about radiation protection.
The WNA provides a clear and strong voice for the industry. It brings together experts from all parts of nuclear energy. Its main goal is to promote the safest and widest possible use of nuclear power.
Sharing Information with the Public
The World Nuclear Association's public website offers easy-to-understand information about the global nuclear industry. The site has many helpful documents and educational papers. These are updated regularly. Ian Hore-Lacy, an Australian nuclear power supporter, was the Director of Public Information for 12 years. Later, the WNA and World Nuclear News (WNN) took over this role.
The Association supports WNN, which is an online news service. WNN provides accurate and easy-to-read news about nuclear power. It is free to use, and its content can be shared widely.
The Association also has a reactor database. This database contains information on nuclear power reactors around the world, including past, present, and future ones.
Other WNA Services
The World Nuclear Association also works on other projects to help nuclear power develop peacefully. One example is World Nuclear University (WNU). This is a global partnership that includes the WNA, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, and the World Association of Nuclear Operators. WNU aims to improve education and leadership in peaceful nuclear science and technology. It offers programs that add to what students learn in other nuclear schools. The biggest event for WNU is the Summer Institute, held every July. It brings together experts from industry and government to talk about all parts of nuclear power. WNU also runs five one-week courses each year with universities worldwide. These courses help students learn more about today's nuclear industry.
