The World Nuclear Association is a group that works to support and promote nuclear power around the world. It helps companies that are part of the global nuclear industry.

Its members include companies involved in every step of creating nuclear energy. This includes getting uranium from the ground (mining), preparing it to be used as nuclear fuel, building nuclear power plants, moving nuclear materials safely, and managing used nuclear fuel. It also includes companies that actually generate electricity using nuclear power.

Together, the members of the World Nuclear Association produce 70% of the world's nuclear power. They also handle most of the world's uranium production and preparation. The Association aims to help its members work together on technical and business matters. It also works to help people better understand nuclear technology. The Association has about 30 staff members. It was started in 2001, growing from an older group called the Uranium Institute, which began in 1975.

Joining the World Nuclear Association

The World Nuclear Association is always growing its membership. Many new members come from countries outside the OECD. These are countries where nuclear power is already used or is being considered. Members are located in 44 countries, representing 80% of the world's population.

The yearly fee for a company to join depends on its size. The Association's office in London figures out the fee using set rules. Companies in non-OECD countries often get big discounts on their fees.

There is also a lower-cost membership for groups that are not focused on making money. This includes academic, research, policy, or regulatory organizations. You can find a list of all current members on the World Nuclear Association's website.

Rules for Good Conduct: Charter of Ethics

The World Nuclear Association has a special set of rules called the Charter of Ethics. These rules act as a shared guide for all its member organizations. This charter explains the responsibilities of the nuclear industry. It also highlights the international rules and systems put in place to support safe nuclear energy. This idea comes from U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower's vision of 'Atoms for Peace'.

The members of the World Nuclear Association choose a Director General. They also elect a board of 20 people to manage the organization. The current Director General is Sama Bilbao y León. The Chairman of the board is Philippe Knoche, who is the CEO of Orano. The Vice Chairman is Kirill Komarov, a First Deputy Director General at Rosatom. This board helps run the organization and sets its main goals. These goals must be approved by all the members.

What the World Nuclear Association Does

Helping the Industry Work Together

A key job of the World Nuclear Association is to help its members connect and work together. This helps them in their business.

The Association has ongoing Working Groups made up of members and staff. These groups share information and study different topics. These topics include:

  • Working together on reactor design and safety checks.
  • Keeping people safe from radiation (radiological protection).
  • Understanding the costs of nuclear power plants.
  • Rules and laws about nuclear energy (nuclear law).
  • How materials and services are supplied (supply chain).
  • Moving radioactive materials safely.
  • Managing radioactive waste and taking apart old nuclear plants (decommissioning).
  • Making nuclear plants work as well as possible.
  • Setting standards for uranium mining.
  • Managing risks when building nuclear plants.
  • Keeping the international nuclear fuel supply safe.
  • Studying the market for nuclear fuel.

When these groups meet, members are careful not to discuss anything that could seem like they are trying to control prices. They avoid talking about specific contracts or prices for products. They also do not discuss who should sell to whom or other topics that might stop fair competition.

Meetings and Events

The World Nuclear Association holds an annual event called the Symposium in London. This meeting is a place for experts from the nuclear industry to speak. The Association has also given an award for 'Distinguished Contribution to the Peaceful Worldwide Use of Nuclear Energy'.

The Association also works with the Nuclear Energy Institute on yearly World Nuclear Fuel Cycle meetings. These meetings are for industry leaders interested in the supply of nuclear fuel, especially uranium.

Speaking for the Industry

The World Nuclear Association speaks for the international nuclear industry at important global meetings. These include:

  • Advisory groups at the International Atomic Energy Agency and Nuclear Energy Agency. These groups discuss transport and all parts of nuclear safety.
  • United Nations meetings about sustainable development and climate change. The Association attended the 2009 Copenhagen and COP26 climate talks.
  • Discussions by the International Commission on Radiological Protection and OSPAR on radiation safety.

Unlike older ways of representing the industry, the Association offers one clear voice. It brings together experts from all parts of the industry. Its goal is to strongly promote the safest and widest possible use of nuclear power.

Sharing Information with the Public

The World Nuclear Association's public website is a helpful place to find information about the global nuclear industry. The site offers easy-to-understand documents and educational papers. These are updated all the time.

The Association also supports World Nuclear News (WNN). This is an online news service that provides accurate information about nuclear power. It is free to use, and its content can be shared widely.

The Association also has a reactor database. This database contains information about nuclear power reactors around the world, including past, present, and future ones.

Other Helpful Services

The World Nuclear Association is involved in other projects to help nuclear power develop peacefully. One example is World Nuclear University (WNU). This is a global partnership that includes the World Nuclear Association, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, and the World Association of Nuclear Operators. Its goal is to improve education and leadership in using nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes.

The WNU offers programs that add to what is taught in existing nuclear schools. The most important event is the Summer Institute, held every July. It brings together experts from industry and government to talk about all aspects of nuclear power. The WNU also runs five one-week courses each year with universities worldwide. These courses help students learn more about today's nuclear industry.
