A Sweet History
The First Museum (1990-2007)
The first World of Coca-Cola was in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. It was near the Georgia State Capitol building. The museum opened in 1990 and stayed open until 2007. About nine million people visited the first museum! It was Atlanta's most popular indoor place until the Georgia Aquarium opened in 2009.
The museum showed how Coca-Cola started way back in 1886. That's when Dr. John S. Pemberton, a pharmacist from Atlanta, made a special drink syrup. His partner, Frank M. Robinson, gave it the name Coca-Cola. He also designed the famous swirly logo.
The museum was in a three-story building. A huge neon Coca-Cola sign, 30 feet tall, was at the entrance. Visitors started their tour on the top floor and worked their way down. They saw about 1,000 Coca-Cola items from different times. There were fun things to do, like a copy of a 1930s soda fountain. You could also watch videos of old Coca-Cola ads. A 10-minute movie showed how Coke is enjoyed around the world.
One cool part was the 'Spectacular Fountain'. Here, visitors could try many different Coca-Cola drinks. In the 'Tastes of the States' area, you could try 22 different soft drinks. Some of these were only sold in certain parts of the USA. The 'Tastes of the World' exhibit let you try drinks from other countries. There was also a gift shop to buy souvenirs.
The old museum building was bought by the Georgia state government in 2007. They thought about making it a state history museum. But it cost too much to fix up. In June 2024, the old building was taken down. Now, it's a parking area for the State Capitol complex.
The New Museum (2007-Present)
The World of Coca-Cola museum in Atlanta moved to a new spot in 2007. It's just a few blocks from where John Pemberton first made Coca-Cola. The new building cost $97 million to build. It opened on May 24, 2007.
The museum is in Atlanta, Georgia, where the Coca-Cola company's main office is. It's located in a place called Pemberton Place. This name honors John Pemberton, who invented Coca-Cola. This area is also home to the Georgia Aquarium and the Center for Civil & Human Rights.
The museum has exhibits about the secret formula of Coca-Cola. There's a 3D movie where scientists try to find the secret recipe. Visitors can also taste 60 different Coca-Cola flavors from all over the world! The museum used to have a real bottling line. It made small bottles of Coca-Cola for guests. But since 2013, this part is just a show.
