History of Coca-Cola
The First Museum: 1990–2007
The very first World of Coca-Cola museum was in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. It was located between the Georgia State Capitol and the Underground Atlanta shopping area. This museum opened in 1990 and stayed open until 2007. About nine million people visited the original World of Coca-Cola. It was Atlanta's most popular indoor attraction for a long time!
The idea for the museum came from the long history of Coca-Cola, which began in 1886. That's when Dr. John Stith Pemberton, a pharmacist from Atlanta, created a special soft drink. It had a unique flavor syrup that people really loved. His partner, Frank Mason Robinson, came up with the name "Coca-Cola." He also designed the famous swirly writing we still see today!
The first museum was in a three-story building. Its entrance had a huge neon Coca-Cola sign, which was 30 feet tall! The tour started on the top floor and went down. You could see about 1,000 Coca-Cola items in order from oldest to newest. There were also fun things to do, like a pretend 1930s soda fountain. You could watch videos of old Coca-Cola ads and a 10-minute movie about Coke around the world.
A favorite part was the 'Spectacular Fountain.' Here, visitors could try many different Coca-Cola products. In the 'Tastes of the States' area, you could even try 22 different soft drinks. Some of these were only sold in certain parts of the country! The 'Tastes of the World' exhibit let you try drinks from all over the globe. Of course, there was also a gift shop to buy souvenirs.
After Coca-Cola moved out in 2007, the state government bought the old building. They thought about making it a state history museum. But it needed a lot of work, and there wasn't enough money to fix it up.
New Location and Fun Exhibits: 2007–Present
The Atlanta museum moved to a new spot at 121 Baker Street. This is just a few blocks from where John Pemberton first made Coca-Cola! The new building is 92,000 square feet and cost $97 million to build. It opened in 2007.
The museum is in Atlanta, Georgia, where the Coca-Cola company's main office is. It's part of a big area called Pemberton Place. This name honors John Pemberton, who invented Coca-Cola. This 20-acre area is across from Centennial Olympic Park. It's also home to the Georgia Aquarium and the Center for Civil & Human Rights. The new museum opened on May 24, 2007, replacing the old one.
The museum has cool exhibits about the secret formula of Coca-Cola. There's also a fun 3D movie where a brave scientist tries to find the secret! Visitors can taste 60 different flavors of Coca-Cola drinks from all over the world. The museum used to have a real bottling line that made small bottles of Coke for guests. But since 2013, it's just a simulation to save on costs.
Other Coca-Cola Places Around the World
Besides Atlanta, there are other cool Coca-Cola spots! Club Cool is at Walt Disney World's Epcot park. It used to be called Ice Station Cool and looked like a polar expedition. Just like other Coca-Cola exhibits, it lets guests taste drinks from around the world. In 2016, a World of Coca-Cola opened in Disney Springs. It's similar to the Atlanta museum and also offers samples of Coca-Cola products from different countries.
The World of Coca-Cola Las Vegas opened in 1997. It was located in the Showcase Mall on the Las Vegas Strip. It closed in 2000, but the "Everything Coca-Cola" store there is still open. There was also a World of Coca-Cola Tokyo in Japan. It closed on January 15, 2007. You can also find a Coca-Cola Museum in Taoyuan City, Taiwan, which opened in 2007.
