Wotton's History
What's in a Name?
The name "Wotton" has a cool meaning from old English! It means 'Wood farm' or 'Wood settlement'. Imagine a small village or farm surrounded by trees. The "St. Mary" part of its older name, Wotton St. Mary, comes from the church there, which is dedicated to St. Mary de Lode.
Wotton in the Domesday Book
Wotton St. Mary was even mentioned in the famous Domesday Book. This book was like a big survey ordered by William the Conqueror way back in 1085. It listed all the towns and lands in England! In this old record, Wotton was called Cerletone.
Changes Over Time
Wotton St. Mary became its own official parish (a type of local area) in 1866. But things change! On April 1, 1966, the parish was officially ended. Wotton then became part of several other areas around Gloucester. These included Barnwood, Barton St. Mary, Gloucester St. Catherine, Gloucester St. John the Baptist, Longford, Matson, South Hamlet, Wotton St. Mary Within, and Wotton St. Mary Without.
