Early History
During the early Zhou dynasty, the Xuchang area was given to the Xu family. It became known as the State of Xu. Later, during the Spring and Autumn period and Warring States period, other states like Zheng and Chu took over Xuchang. The Xu family eventually had to move.
Capital City Status
Xuchang became very important during the late Han dynasty. A powerful leader named Cao Cao made Xuchang his main base in 196 AD. The old capital, Luoyang, was destroyed by war. So, Cao Cao moved the emperor, Emperor Xian, to what is now Xuchang.
In 220 AD, Cao Cao's son, Cao Pi, officially made Xuchang the capital of his new state, called Cao Wei. He even renamed the city "Xuchang," which means "Xu Rising." The Wei emperors stayed in Xuchang until they moved the capital to Luoyang in the 220s.
