History of Pingdingshan
In Chinese, "Pingdingshan" means "mountain with a flat top." The city gets its name from a flat-topped plateau nearby. The nickname "Eagle City" comes from a story over 2,000 years ago. During a time called the "Spring and Autumn Annals," a small royal country named Ying was in this area. In ancient Chinese, "Ying" sounded like "Eagle." That's why people started calling Pingdingshan "Eagle City."
Pingdingshan officially became a city in 1957.
