China is home to more people than any other country in the world. These many people have different cultures, histories, and beliefs. The Chinese government officially recognizes 56 different groups of people. These groups are called "nationalities" or mínzú in China.

China's Diverse People

Most people in China belong to one large group. About 90% of everyone in China is part of the Han people. This means they are the biggest group by far.

Meet China's Ethnic Minorities

The other 55 groups are called "ethnic minorities." They are smaller in number than the Han Chinese. These groups have unique traditions, languages, and customs. They add to the rich variety of China's culture.
