Yahya Sinwar was a Palestinian political figure who served as the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip from 2017 until his death in October 2024, and briefly as the chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau in 2024.

Early Life and Education

Yahya Ibrahim Hassan Sinwar was born on October 29, 1962, in the Khan Yunis refugee camp, located in the Gaza Strip. At that time, the Gaza Strip was under Egyptian administration. His family had experienced displacement from their home in Majdal Asqalan (now known as Ashkelon) during the 1948 Palestine War, seeking safety in the Gaza Strip. Growing up in a refugee camp deeply influenced Sinwar, shaping his understanding of the Palestinian experience.

After completing his high school education at Khan Yunis Secondary School for Boys, Sinwar continued his studies at the Islamic University of Gaza. There, he earned a bachelor's degree in Arabic studies. He was also known as a hafiz, a title given to someone who has completely memorized the Quran, a holy book in Islam. His younger brother, Mohammed Sinwar, also became a military leader within Hamas.

Early Activities and Time in Prison

Sinwar's involvement in political activities began early in his life. He was first arrested in 1982 for his activities and spent several months in Far'a prison. During this time, he met other Palestinian activists and became even more dedicated to the Palestinian cause.

After his release in 1985, he co-founded an organization called Munazzamat al Jihad w'al-Dawa (Majd) with Rawhi Mushtaha. This group focused on internal security within the Palestinian community and later became part of Hamas's internal security efforts in 1987.

In 1988, Sinwar was arrested again and, in 1989, he was sentenced to multiple life sentences. He spent 22 years in prison in Israel. During his long imprisonment, Sinwar continued to be involved in coordinating activities for Hamas from behind bars. He was known for his resourcefulness and leadership among fellow inmates. He even attempted to escape multiple times, including trying to tunnel out of his cell. He also found ways to communicate with Hamas leaders outside the prison, often planning for the possibility of prisoner exchanges.

During his time in prison Sinwar mastered Hebrew through an online program and extensively studied Israeli news and history to better understand the region and its conflicts. He even translated autobiographies of former Israeli security chiefs into Arabic for his fellow inmates to study. Sinwar once said that they turned prison into "sanctuaries of worship and academies for study." He also took courses through the Open University of Israel, studying history, including the history of Jews, the Holocaust, and Zionism, as well as political science.

Following his release, Sinwar was elected to a significant role within Hamas, overseeing military-related activities. In November 2012, he met with Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force General Qasem Soleimani in Tehran, and after becoming leader in Gaza, he worked to strengthen cooperation between Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran.

Leadership of Hamas in the Gaza Strip (2017–2024)

In February 2017, Yahya Sinwar was elected as the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, taking over from Ismail Haniyeh. This was a significant promotion, placing him in charge of Hamas's operations in Gaza. He quickly established a Hamas-controlled administrative committee for the Gaza Strip, aiming to strengthen Hamas's governance there. He brought many of his former prison associates into key positions, including Rawhi Mushtaha, who became head of Hamas's Gaza government, and Tawfiq Abu Naim, who helped establish an internal security force.

Sinwar held strong beliefs about the path to achieving Palestinian goals. He was dedicated to what he saw as the "liberation of Palestine" and believed this would be achieved through resistance rather than negotiations. He worked to strengthen Hamas's military capabilities and encouraged militants to capture more Israeli soldiers.

In March 2021, Sinwar was re-elected for a second four-year term as the head of Hamas in Gaza. By this time, he had solidified his control over the territory.

According to reports, Sinwar was a key figure in planning the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel. These attacks led to a major conflict known as the Gaza war, which also affected other parts of the Middle East. Following these events, Sinwar became a top target for the Israeli military.

During the Israel-Gaza war, Sinwar was believed to be hiding in a complex system of tunnels beneath Gaza. Israeli officials stated that he constructed an underground fortress in his hometown of Khan Yunis, from where he continued to coordinate activities. Israeli forces came close to capturing him multiple times, but he consistently managed to evade them by moving between underground locations.

Chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau (2024)

Following the death of Ismail Haniyeh on July 31, 2024, Yahya Sinwar was named the new "overall leader" of the Hamas movement and the new chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau in August 2024. This decision was made by the Shura Council, the body that elects Hamas's politburo, and was seen as a message of defiance.

His election was seen by some as signaling a more determined phase for Hamas, given his strong connections with various resistance groups. Reports suggested his election indicated that the movement supported his strategy of engaging in conflict with Israel. His leadership was believed to consolidate Hamas's alignment with certain regional allies and its resistance to diplomatic negotiations.

Sinwar was reportedly offered an opportunity to leave Gaza for Egypt in exchange for Egypt negotiating a ceasefire on behalf of Hamas, but he refused, stating he would remain on "Palestinian soil." He also recommended that, in the event of his death, Hamas appoint a council of leaders to manage the transition.

Death

Yahya Sinwar died on October 16, 2024. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Sinwar's death was not the end of the war in Gaza but marked the beginning of a new era without Hamas's rule over Gaza. Hamas confirmed Sinwar's death on October 18.

Personal Life

On November 21, 2011, Yahya Sinwar married Samar Muhammad Abu Zamar. They had three children together. Samar Muhammad Abu Zamar earned a master's degree in theology from the Islamic University of Gaza. After Sinwar's death, Samar and their children reportedly left the Gaza Strip for Turkey.
