Early life and education
Yalitza Aparicio Martínez was born on December 11, 1993, in Tlaxiaco, a town in Oaxaca, Mexico. Her parents are from indigenous groups. Her father is Mixtec and her mother is Triqui. Even though her parents spoke indigenous languages, Yalitza did not speak the Mixtec language fluently. She had to learn it for her role in Roma.
Yalitza was raised by her single mother, who worked as a maid. She did not go to a special acting school. Instead, she studied to become a teacher. She earned a degree in early childhood education and was about to qualify as a pre-school teacher when she got her first acting job.
Acting career
Aparicio's first acting role was in the drama film Roma. The movie was written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón. It was released in November 2018. Many critics praised her performance. Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian newspaper said she brought something "gentle, delicate, stoic and selfless" to her role, calling her "the jewel of this outstanding film."
Her performance in Roma led to her nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress. This was a historic moment because she was the first Indigenous woman from the Americas to get an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
