Norma Monserrat Bustamante Laferte (born on May 2, 1983), known as Mon Laferte, is a talented musician, singer, composer, and painter from Chile and Mexico. She is known for her amazing voice and exciting performances on stage. Her music mixes many styles like pop, rock, bolero, cumbia, and salsa.

Some of her popular songs include "Tu falta de querer," "Amárrame," and "Mi buen amor." She has won four Latin Grammy Awards, which is more than any other Chilean artist. She also has two MTV Europe Music Awards and has been nominated for the Grammy Awards twice. A Netflix documentary about her 2021-22 tour and her journey to motherhood, called MON LAFERTE, te amo, will be released in August 2024.

Early Life and Musical Start

Mon Laferte was born in Viña del Mar, Chile. Her grandmother, who sang bolero songs, was one of her first musical inspirations. Mon remembers going with her grandmother to tango clubs in Valparaíso when she was very young.

She started her music journey at age 9 after winning a guitar in a singing contest. When she was 13, she earned a scholarship to a music school in Viña del Mar. Soon after, she began performing in bars in Valparaíso and Santiago.

Mon Laferte became a vegetarian in 2013. By 2017, she became a vegan.

Her Music Career

In 2003, Mon Laferte, then known as Monserrat Bustamante, joined a Chilean TV singing competition called Rojo. That same year, she released her first album, La Chica de Rojo. The album was very successful in Chile, earning Gold and Platinum awards. She stayed with the Clan Rojo TV show for four seasons.

In 2007, Mon Laferte moved to Mexico City to start a new part of her music career. She began singing in nightclubs and recording cover songs. In 2009, she released a song called "Lo mismo que yo." Later that year, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, which paused her music plans.

After recovering, Mon Laferte released her second album, Desechable, in 2011. The next year, in 2012, she was a judge on the Chilean version of The X Factor, called Factor X. She also became a singer for the Mexican heavy metal band Mystica Girls and recorded an album with them in 2014.

In 2013, she released her third album, Tornasol. She became very popular in 2015 with her song "Tu falta de querer" from the album Mon Laferte, Vol.1. In 2016, she won an MTV Millennial Award for "Latin Video of the Year." She also received two nominations at the Latin Grammy Awards of 2016.

Her fifth album, La Trenza, came out in 2017 and was highly praised. Her song "Amárrame" with Colombian rock star Juanes won the Best Alternative Song award at the 18th Annual Latin Grammy Awards. She also won "Best North Latin Artist" at the 2017 MTV Europe Music Awards.

In February 2018, she released "Antes de Ti," which was nominated for "Song of the Year" at the 19th Annual Latin Grammy Awards. Mon Laferte also directed the music video for this song. In June 2018, she co-hosted the 2018 MTV Millennial Awards in Mexico City.

Mon Laferte recorded her sixth album, Norma, in 2018. It was recorded in one session with all instruments playing together, like a live performance. The album was released on November 9, 2018. She also collaborated with Gwen Stefani on a Christmas song, "Feliz Navidad."

In January 2019, she was announced to perform at the American Music Festival Coachella. In February 2019, she was nominated for a Billboard Latin Music Awards. Her album Norma also received a Gold record in Mexico. In May 2019, she announced her U.S. tour, "La Gira de Norma."
