Live at El Morro, Puerto Rico is a live music album by the famous musician Yanni. It was released in 2012. This album features music from two special concerts Yanni performed outdoors in December 2011. These concerts took place at the historic El Morro castle in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The music CD became very popular. It reached the #1 spot on Billboard's New Age Album chart in both 2012 and 2013.

Behind the Music: The El Morro Concerts

The Live at El Morro, Puerto Rico album and video were recorded during two concerts. These shows happened on December 16 and 17, 2011. Both concerts were completely sold out! They were held on the grounds of the Castillo San Felipe del Morro ("El Morro"). This castle is a very old and important place, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Old San Juan. Yanni had dreamed of performing at this historic spot for about twenty years.

Weather Challenges During the Shows

Yanni had planned for two concerts, one on Friday and one on Saturday. Sunday was set aside as a backup day in case of rain. It had rained for 25 days straight before the first concert on Friday! During the Friday show, rain and strong winds started. This made it dangerous to continue the outdoor performance. So, the concert had to be stopped about three-quarters of the way through.

The weather was much better for the second show on Saturday. That concert was completed just as planned. Yanni mentioned that 35 cameras and three live camera operators filmed the show. When he left Puerto Rico on Sunday, his planned rain day, it was raining again. This meant he couldn't have done a makeup concert that day.

Yanni later said that "the weather became part of the show." However, it was the first time in his thirty-year career that a concert had to be stopped. For those who attended the shortened Friday concert, the show's producers offered special "rain checks." These could be used for Yanni's next concert in Puerto Rico or other shows by the same company. They also received a certificate to get the concert DVD.

Concert Details and Impact

More than 10,000 tickets were sold for these concerts. Putting on the shows cost about $3 million.

The concerts were also shown as special broadcasts on PBS starting in March 2012. The video was recorded in high definition, which means it looked very clear and detailed. This was Yanni's tenth time working with PBS on a production.

The Live at El Morro, Puerto Rico CD was a big hit. It reached #1 on Billboard's New Age Album chart in both 2012 and 2013. It also reached #109 on the Billboard 200 chart in 2012. In Canada, it debuted at #52 on the Canadian Albums Chart.
