Exploring Yarraden's Land

Yarraden is on the eastern side of the Cape York Peninsula. It borders the Coral Sea. The Great Dividing Range, a long mountain chain, runs through Yarraden. It goes from Coen in the north to Dixie in the south. The main road, called the Peninsula Developmental Road, also crosses Yarraden.

Rivers and Mountains

The Great Dividing Range acts like a giant wall. Rivers and creeks on the east side flow into the Coral Sea. Those on the west side flow into the Gulf of Carpentaria. This is called a watershed.

There are many mountains in Yarraden. Here are some of them:

  • Mount Newberry is about 260 meters (853 feet) high. It was named after a chemist by explorer William Hann.
  • Mount Walsh is on the Great Dividing Range. It is about 272 meters (892 feet) high. It was named after a storekeeper by explorer James Venture Mulligan.
  • Mount Ryan is about 442 meters (1,450 feet) high.
  • Spion Cop is about 315 meters (1,033 feet) high.
  • Lapunya Mount is about 309 meters (1,014 feet) high.
  • Flying Fox Hill is about 262 meters (860 feet) high.

You can also find a deep valley called The Gorge in Yarraden.

Coastal Areas and Parks

Only a small part of Yarraden is on the coast. This area faces Princess Charlotte Bay. This bay was named in 1815 by a naval officer named Charles Jeffreys. The Cliff Islands are a group of islands about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) offshore.

A small part of Yarraden is inside the Lama Lama National Park. Most of the land in Yarraden is used for grazing animals. There are also several large farms, called homesteads, in the area:

  • Artemis
  • Astrea
  • Crystal Vale
  • Ebagoola
  • Glen Garland
  • Lily Vale
  • Musgrave
  • New Bamboo

Yarraden's Past

Yarraden has an interesting history, especially with gold mining.

Gold Rush Days

The town of Yarraden was created to support the Lukin River gold field. Gold was found there in 1901. People said the gold reefs were "amongst the largest and richest" in 1903. The two main gold mines were Golden King and Savannah. Golden King was active from 1901 to 1914, and again in 1917 and 1921. Savannah was worked from 1901 to 1907, and in 1912.

The town of Ebagoola was also surveyed in 1900. It is now an abandoned gold mining town.

Early Schools

Ebagoolah Provisional School opened in 1905. It became Ebagoolah State School in 1909. However, it closed just a few years later in 1914.
