Yegen facts for kids
Yegen is a small village located in the province of Granada, in southern Spain. It is part of a larger area called Alpujarra de la Sierra. Yegen is known for its beautiful mountain views and quiet way of life.
A famous British writer named Gerald Brenan lived in Yegen during the 1920s. He wrote about the village and its people in his well-known book, South from Granada. Brenan chose Yegen because it was a peaceful place with lots of water, even though it didn't have paved roads or public transport back then. Today, the village often holds events to remember Brenan and his interest in their local culture. There are even plans to open a museum about him in Yegen.
A Look Back: Yegen's History
Who Lived Here First?
Most people living in Yegen today are descendants of families who moved there a long time ago. These families came from northern parts of Spain, mainly from a region called Galicia. They moved to Yegen in the 1600s after a group of people called the Moriscos were asked to leave Spain.
Leaving and Returning Home
For many years, especially in the late 1800s and throughout the 1900s, many people from Yegen left their homes. Like many others in Spain, they moved to other countries in Europe (like Andorra, Germany, and Switzerland) or to America. They were looking for better job opportunities and a new life.
However, this trend started to change in the late 1980s. Now, some people are moving back to Yegen. There's also a small community of people from other European countries, including the United Kingdom, who have bought houses in Yegen. They use these homes as either their main residence or a holiday home.
