A Look at Yeguada's Past
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a deal called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Puerto Rico then became an "unincorporated territory" of the United States. This means it is a part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
Counting People in Yeguada
In 1899, the United States government took a census of Puerto Rico. A census is like a big count of all the people living in an area. The census found that 794 people lived in Yeguada barrio at that time.
