Yalaburga, also known as Yelburga, is a small town in the Koppal district of the Indian state of Karnataka. It's a place with a long history and some really old and interesting temples.

Discovering Yelburga

Yelburga is located in the Indian state of Karnataka. It sits at an average height of about 605 meters (1,984 feet) above sea level. This town is about 40 kilometers northwest of Koppal, another important place in the district.

A Look Back in Time

Yelburga has a rich past! A long time ago, in the early 11th century, a group of rulers called the Yelambarga dynasty ruled this area. We know this from an old stone carving, or "edict," that talks about Yelburga from the years 1026 to 1126 AD. Later, Yelburga was one of the last "talukas" (which are like administrative areas or sub-districts) under the rule of the Nizams.

People of Yelburga

According to a census from 2001, Yelburga had a population of 11,437 people. About 51% of the people were males and 49% were females. The town's average literacy rate (meaning how many people can read and write) was 58%. This was a little lower than the national average for India at that time. Among the people in Yelburga, 69% of males could read and write, while 47% of females could. Also, about 15% of the town's population was under 6 years old.

Amazing Temples

Yelburga and the areas around it are home to several ancient and beautiful temples. These temples are important historical and religious sites.

Timmappana Temple

This temple was built in the 17th century AD by a local leader named Timmappa. It's an underground temple dedicated to Hanuman, a very important deity. The temple is a wonderful example of old architecture. In front of the Hanuman statue, there's also a "Kalyani," which is a special well or pond.

You can find this temple next to Koppal Road, on the south side of the town's main administrative area. Timmappa also planted many tamarind trees around the temple, and today they are huge! This area is now known as Timmappana Topu, which means "Timmappa's tree plantation." On the pillars of the temple, you can see old Kannada writings that tell stories about events from that time.

Every year on Ugadi Day, a special Car Festival is held here. People celebrate by using a "Huchhayya," which is a type of festival cart built on a bullock cart. This historical place is very special and local leaders and the government are working to make sure more people know about it.

Other Important Temples

  • The Mahadeva Temple, Itagi is another significant temple nearby.
  • The Maruteshwara Temple is located in Guttur, about 18 kilometers away on the Yalaburga - Bevoor Road.
  • The Trilingabasaweshwar temple in Mudhol was built a very long time ago, in the 11th century.
  • The Marutheshwara temple in Chikkavankalakunta is also very famous. It's about 25 kilometers away on NH 13 and was built by a wise person named Vyasamaharshi.
  • You can also find the Anjaneya temple Rudrabhavi, and other places like Kondada bhavi and Kempukere, which have historical structures called mantapas.
