Yevgeny Ivanovich Shaposhnikov (Russian: Евгений Иванович Шапошников; born February 3, 1942 – died December 8, 2020) was an important military leader and business person from the Soviet Union and Russia. He became a Marshal of Aviation in 1991, which is a very high rank in the air force. He was also the very last Minister of Defense for the Soviet Union.

Early Life and Education
Yevgeny Shaposhnikov was born on a farm near a town called Aksay in Rostov Oblast, Russia. He loved aviation from a young age. In 1963, he finished his studies at the Kharkov Higher Military Aviation School. Later, in 1969, he graduated from the Gagarin Air Force Academy, which is a famous school for air force officers.
Military Career: Rising Through the Ranks
Shaposhnikov joined the Soviet Air Force and quickly moved up in his career. He was a skilled pilot and leader. From 1987 to 1989, he was in charge of the air force for the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany. This was a very important role. In July 1990, he became the main commander of the entire Soviet Air Force.
Political Roles: A Time of Big Changes
Serving the Soviet Union
From August 1991 to February 1992, Yevgeny Shaposhnikov held the important job of Minister of Defence of Soviet Union. This meant he was the last person to hold this role before the Soviet Union ended.
In December 1991, several countries that were part of the Soviet Union decided to form a new group called the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Shaposhnikov was given temporary command of the Soviet Armed Forces during this time of change. By early 1992, the Ministry of Defense of the old Soviet Union started to be called the main command of the CIS Armed Forces.
Leading the CIS Armed Forces
On February 14, 1992, the leaders of the CIS countries officially named Shaposhnikov the Commander-in-Chief of the Joint Armed Forces of the CIS. This was a big responsibility, as he was in charge of the military forces for many countries.
Later, from June to September 1993, he also served as the secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation. This council helps make important decisions about Russia's safety.
Business Career: After Military Service
After his military and political roles, Shaposhnikov moved into the business world. In 1994, he became a special representative for the President of Russia in a company that exported weapons.
From November 1995 to March 1997, he was the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of Aeroflot, a major airline company. After that, he worked as an adviser to the President of the Russian Federation, helping with matters related to aviation and space.
Later Life and Passing
Yevgeny Shaposhnikov passed away on December 8, 2020, in Moscow. He died from COVID-19. He was buried in the Troyekurovskoye Cemetery on December 11.
