The Story of Yogi's Great Escape
Yogi's Big Problem
One spring, Yogi and Boo Boo wake up from their winter sleep. They find three baby bear cubs left at their cave! Even though they are surprised, Yogi and Boo Boo decide to take care of the cubs.
Meanwhile, there's bad news for Jellystone Park. The park is costing too much money. The park boss tells Ranger Smith that Jellystone Park must close. This means all the bears, including Yogi, will be sent to a zoo.
Yogi's Escape Plan
Yogi hates the idea of living in a zoo. He decides to make a big plan to escape. He finds old car parts from a failed fishing trip. With these parts, he builds a special "Supercar." This car even has a small seat for the three baby bears. Together, they drive away from the park to find a new place to live.
Ranger Smith's Chase
Ranger Smith tries to catch Yogi, but he fails. So, he hires a professional animal catcher named Trapper and his dog, Yapper. But Trapper and Yapper often cause more trouble than help for Ranger Smith. Yogi and his friends have many adventures on their journey.
Adventures on the Road
Their first stop is a watermelon patch. After eating lots of watermelons, the bears rest in what looks like an empty tree house. It turns out to be the secret clubhouse of the Bike Brigade. These are three boys who ride bikes and use a shortwave radio. When the boys return, they think the bears are aliens! They attack them with squirt guns. Yogi gives up, and the boys realize it's him. They decide to help Yogi escape. They use their radio to call other clubs across the country. They ask them to watch for Yogi and help him get away.
Next, they arrive in a western ghost town. The only person left seems to be the sheriff, Quick Draw McGraw. He mistakes Yogi and Boo Boo for bank robbers! He throws them and the cubs in jail. But another club, the Lone Raiders, helps Yogi escape. They also catch the real robbers, who look a lot like Yogi and Boo Boo.
Meeting Old Friends
Yogi and his friends then travel to the bayou. There, they meet Wally Gator, who is also trying to avoid the zoo. Wally lives in a spooky steamboat. He uses fake ghosts to scare away zookeepers. He invites Yogi and his friends in and gives them a great dinner. When Ranger Smith, Trapper, and Yapper show up, Wally and the bears try to scare them away. But then a real ghost appears! Everyone runs away. While the ghost chases the hunters, another club, the Swamp Foxes, rescues Yogi and his friends.
The Supercar then stops at a carnival. Yogi meets his old friend Snagglepuss there. Snagglepuss hides the bears from Ranger Smith. He disguises them as Egyptian dancers in his stage show.
The Final Escape
Ranger Smith soon figures out their disguises. The bears quickly escape into a hot air balloon and float away. As the balloon flies across the country, Ranger Smith and his helpers chase them. Trapper and Yapper try to grab the balloon from the top of Mount Rushmore. They fall and are not seen again.
The balloon finally gets caught on the antenna of the Empire State Building in thick fog. Ranger Smith flies up in a helicopter and gives Yogi a phone. The President of the United States is on the line! The President tells Yogi that Jellystone Park will not close after all. Yogi and his friends can go back home!
