Early Life and Football Start
Yordy Reyna was born in Chiclayo, a city in Peru. When he was 14, he moved to Lima. There, he tried out for a famous football club called Alianza Lima. He did so well that he was invited to join their youth teams.
He kept playing great, moving up through the different age groups until he reached the main team. People often compared his playing style to Jefferson Farfán, who was a big star for Peru and played in Germany. Yordy was good at making plays, passing the ball, scoring important goals, and getting past defenders easily.
Club Career Highlights
Playing for Alianza Lima
In March 2011, Yordy Reyna joined the main team of Alianza Lima. This happened after he had a fantastic season in the reserve league, where he scored seven goals. He also played well in a special tournament for young players called the 2011 U-20 Copa Libertadores.
He played his first game in Peru's top league, the Peruvian First Division, on August 27, 2011. He came into the game near the end to help his team win 4–2. In 2012, he earned a regular spot on the team. He scored his first league goal on May 18, 2012. That season, he scored five more goals and was even named the Jugador Revelacion, which means "Breakthrough Player" of the year! In 2013, he scored six goals, including the winning goal in a big match against Universitario de Deportes.
Moving to Red Bull Salzburg
In the middle of 2013, Yordy Reyna signed with an Austrian club called Red Bull Salzburg. It was reported that the transfer cost about 2 million euros. He played very well in his first friendly match for them, even scoring the winning goal.
After joining Red Bull Salzburg, he was loaned out to other Austrian clubs, FC Liefering and SV Grödig. Being "loaned out" means he played for another team for a while, but his main contract was still with Red Bull Salzburg. In January 2015, he was loaned to a German club, RB Leipzig, for the rest of that season.
Playing in North America
Vancouver Whitecaps FC
In January 2017, Yordy Reyna moved to Canada to play for Vancouver Whitecaps FC. He got a foot injury during a practice game before the season started, so he missed the first four months of the MLS season. He finally played his first game for the club on July 1, 2017. Just a week later, he scored his first goal for them, which was the winning goal against New York City FC.
D.C. United
On September 19, 2020, Yordy Reyna was "traded" from the Whitecaps to D.C. United. In football, being traded means one team gives a player to another team, often in exchange for money or other players. He played his first game for D.C. United on September 27, 2020. After the 2021 season, D.C. United decided to release him, meaning he was free to find a new team.
Charlotte FC
On December 17, 2021, Reyna signed with Charlotte FC. He joined them as a "free agent," which means his previous contract had ended, and he could sign with any team he wanted. Charlotte FC was a new team, and 2022 was their very first season in the MLS. On February 17, 2023, Charlotte FC "waived" Reyna, which means they ended his contract early.
Return to Russia with Torpedo Moscow
On February 20, 2023, Yordy Reyna signed a contract with Torpedo Moscow, a club in the Russian Premier League. His first contract was for six months, with a chance to extend it. On June 7, 2023, he extended his contract with Torpedo Moscow until June 2026. He also played on loan for Rodina Moscow for the 2024-2025 season.
International Career
Playing for Peru's Under-20 Team
Yordy Reyna was part of the Peru national under-20 football team that played in the 2013 South American Youth Championship in Argentina. He scored goals against Uruguay and Brazil in the first part of the tournament. After his team moved to the final stage, he scored against Paraguay and twice against Ecuador. Even though Peru didn't win the tournament, Yordy Reyna was one of the top goal-scorers, finishing in 3rd place with five goals!
Playing for Peru's National Team
On March 22, 2013, Yordy Reyna was chosen to play for Peru's main national team for the first time. He played in a game against Chile, which Peru won 1–0. This game is known as the Clásico del Pacífico, a big rivalry match. He came into the game in the 79th minute, replacing the team captain.
Just four days later, on March 26, 2013, he started in a "friendly" game against Trinidad and Tobago. A friendly game is one that doesn't count for a championship but is played for practice or fun. In this game, he scored his first goal for the national team! On June 1, 2013, he scored his second international goal in another friendly game, this time against Panama.
