York is a city located in Sumter County, Alabama, in the United States. It started around 1838 when two smaller communities, Old Anvil and New York Station, joined together. New York Station was a stop on a stagecoach line.
Trains arrived in the 1850s, and the name "New" was dropped from York Station in 1861. Later, the "Station" part was also removed. This happened because another town in Alabama had a similar name. York officially became a city on April 6, 1881.
In 2010, York had a population of 2,538 people. From 1920 to 1980, it was the biggest town in Sumter County. Since 1990, it has been the second largest city, after Livingston, which is the county seat.
