Early Life and Political Start
Yun Bo-seon was born in Asan, a city in the South Chungcheong area of Korea. He studied abroad and graduated from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland in 1930.
After Japan's control over Korea ended in 1945, Yun Bo-seon began his career in politics. He was guided by Syngman Rhee, who later became South Korea's first president. In 1948, Rhee made Yun the mayor of Seoul, the capital city. A year later, he became the Minister of Commerce and Industry, dealing with trade and business.
However, Yun soon started to disagree with President Rhee's strong and controlling ways of leading the country. He then worked as the president of the Red Cross Society, which helps people in need. In 1954, he was elected to the National Assembly, which is like the country's parliament. A year later, he helped create the Democratic Party with other leaders who wanted more freedom and democracy.
Becoming President
In 1960, students in South Korea protested for more freedom and a better government. These protests led to President Rhee's government being removed from power. After this, Yun Bo-seon was elected president on August 13, 1960.
At this time, South Korea had changed its government system. The president was mostly a symbolic leader, while the real power was with the parliament. So, Yun Bo-seon was more of a figurehead, meaning he was the official head of state but didn't have much direct power.
Later Years and Retirement
In 1961, Park Chung Hee led a military takeover of the government. Yun Bo-seon stayed on as president for a short time to help the new government seem more official. But he resigned on March 22, 1962.
Yun Bo-seon did not agree with Park Chung Hee's strong leadership. He ran for president two more times, in 1963 and 1967, but he lost both elections. He continued to speak out against the government and faced challenges for his activities. In 1980, Yun Bo-seon decided to retire from politics. After that, he spent his time on cultural activities. He passed away in 1990 from health issues like diabetes and high blood pressure.
