Yuri Vasilyevich Bondarev (Russian: Юрий Васильевич Бондарев, 15 March 1924 — 29 March 2020) was a famous writer and screenwriter from the Soviet Union and Russia. He was well-known for helping to write the script for the movie series Liberation (1968–71).

About Yuri Bondarev

Yuri Bondarev was born on March 15, 1924. He grew up to become a very important writer.

His Time in World War II

Bondarev was a soldier in World War II. He served as an artillery officer, which means he was in charge of big guns used in battles. He joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1944, which was the main political group in the Soviet Union at the time.

After the war, he studied at the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute. He finished his studies in 1951. His very first collection of stories, called On a Large River, was published in 1953.

His Famous Books

Yuri Bondarev became well-known for his novels about war. His books The Battalions Request Fire (1957) and The Last Salvoes (1959) were different from other war stories. They showed the real human side of war, focusing on the true costs and feelings, not just heroes and villains. The Last Salvos was even made into a movie in 1961.

His other novels, like Silence (1962), The Two (1964), and Relatives (1969), made him a leading writer in the Soviet Union. His book Silence was very important because it was one of the first stories to show a person who was wrongly sent to special camps. Bondarev's novels often explored ideas about right and wrong, and the choices people make in life.

In 1969, he wrote The Hot Snow. This book was also about war, specifically the difficult Battle of Stalingrad. It showed the battle from the point of view of many different people, from regular soldiers to military leaders.

His novel The Shore (1975) tells the story of a Soviet writer who finds out that a German woman he loved as a young officer still cares for him. He passes away before he can reach the "shore" of his youthful dreams. This sad event makes an old friend of his think deeply about life's big questions.

Working in Movies

Besides writing books, Bondarev also worked a lot in movies. He helped turn his own novels into films. He also co-wrote the script for the famous movie series Liberation.

Later Life and Passing

In his later years, Bondarev was involved in some political discussions in Russia. He passed away on March 29, 2020, in Moscow, at the age of 96.
