Profession Politician

Zaid al-Rifai (Arabic: زيد الرفاعي) was an important politician from Jordan. He was born on November 27, 1936, and passed away on August 12, 2024. He served as the Prime Minister of Jordan two times. First, from May 1973 to July 1976, and then again from April 1984 to April 1989.

Zaid al-Rifai's Life and Career

Zaid al-Rifai was a very active politician in Jordan. He held the position of prime minister and led four different governments. A "government" is like a team of leaders who help run a country.

Longest-Serving Government

One of his governments was the longest-lasting in Jordan's history. It was in charge for over five years, from April 4, 1984, to April 27, 1989. This shows he was a very stable leader.

A Family of Leaders

Being a prime minister seemed to run in his family! His father, Sameer al-Rifai, also served as Jordan's prime minister. So did his father-in-law, Bahjat Talhouni. Even his son, Samir Rifai, later became prime minister.

Early Challenges

Before becoming prime minister, Zaid al-Rifai served as Jordan's ambassador to the United Kingdom. An ambassador is a country's official representative in another country. In December 1971, while he was ambassador, he faced a dangerous situation. He survived an attempt on his life. This event was linked to political tensions at the time.

Leading the Senate

After his time as prime minister, Zaid al-Rifai continued to serve his country. He became the President of the Senate of Jordan. The Senate is like an important part of the country's parliament, where laws are discussed and approved. He held this role from June 1997 until December 2009, when he decided to resign.
