A Look Back in Time
Puerto Rico used to be under the rule of Spain. After a conflict called the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain and the United States signed a peace agreement. This agreement was known as the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.
Soon after, in 1899, the United States government conducted a survey. This survey, called a census, counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. At that time, Zanja barrio had a population of 833 people. Over the years, more people have moved to Zanja, and its population has grown steadily.
