Zanoni is a small, unincorporated community in Ozark County, Missouri. It is located in the United States, about ten miles northeast of Gainesville on Route 181. Today, only a historic watermill and a post office remain in the community. The community was started in 1898. It was named after a novel called Zanoni by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. The mill was built in 1905 by "Doc" Morrison. It was later restored by his grandson.

Discovering Zanoni, Missouri

Zanoni is a quiet place with a rich history. It shows how small communities once thrived in rural areas. The mill and post office are important parts of its past.

The Historic Mill

The mill at Zanoni is very old and special. It was built in 1905 by "Doc" Morrison. This mill uses an overshot wheel. This means water flows over the top of the wheel to make it turn. The mill was later fixed up by Morrison's grandson. Today, it also works as a bed and breakfast. This means people can stay there overnight.

The Zanoni Spring

The mill is built right where the Zanoni Spring begins. This spring's water comes out of cracks in the ground. These cracks are in a rock layer called the Roubidoux Formation. This formation is very old, from a time called the Ordovician period. It is made of a mix of sandstone and dolomite.

The spring water flows out at the bottom of a ridge. This ridge is above Pine Creek. Pine Creek then flows into Caney Creek. Caney Creek joins Bryant Creek, which then flows into the North Fork River. Finally, the water reaches Norfork Lake. The spring releases a lot of water every day. It discharges about 500,000 gallons of water daily.
