Zawe Ashton (born July 25, 1984) is a talented British actress and writer. She is well-known for her roles in TV shows like Fresh Meat and Not Safe for Work. She also starred in the Netflix movie Velvet Buzzsaw. In 2011, she played Joyce Carol Vincent in Dreams of a Life. More recently, she appeared as Dar-Benn in the Marvel Studios film The Marvels (2023).

Zawe Ashton's Early Life

Zawe Ashton was born in Hackney, London, England, on July 25, 1984. She is the oldest of three children. Her mother is from Uganda, and her father is English. Her grandfather, Paulo Muwanga, was an important political leader in Uganda. He served as President and later as Prime Minister.

Zawe started acting at a young age. She attended the Anna Scher Theatre School from when she was six years old. She was also a member of the National Youth Theatre. Later, she studied acting at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Zawe Ashton has performed in many plays. She was in Harold Pinter's Betrayal in London and on Broadway. Other plays include Rhinoceros and Othello at the Globe Theatre. She also played Salome in the play Salome. In 2010, she won an award for her performance in Salome.

Her film roles include Velvet Buzzsaw for Netflix. She was nominated for an award for her role in Dreams of a Life in 2012. She also appeared in St. Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold and Nocturnal Animals. In 2018, she was in the movie Greta.

On television, Zawe is famous for playing Vod in the Channel 4 comedy Fresh Meat. She was also Claire in the BBC One series Wanderlust. Fans of Doctor Who might remember her as Journey Blue. As a child, she appeared in The Demon Headmaster. In November 2023, she played Dar-Benn in the Marvel movie The Marvels.

Zawe Ashton has received several awards for her acting. In 2010, Nylon magazine named her one of the "55 Faces of the Future." In 2012, Cosmopolitan magazine gave her the Ultimate Newcomer trophy. She also won the Creative Diversity Network Award for her role in Fresh Meat. In 2013, she received a Screen Nation Award for her performance in Dreams of a Life.

Zawe Ashton's Writing Career

Zawe Ashton started writing poetry when she was 17. She won the London Poetry Slam Championship in 2000. A poetry slam is a competition where poets perform their original work. In 2006, she was a Young Writer in Residence at the Contact Theatre.

Her first play, Harm's Way, was recognized in 2007. It was first performed in 2008. She has written other plays, including Skunk and She from the Sea. She also helped write Suddenlossofdignity.com. One of her plays, For all the Women Who Thought They Were Mad, was part of a festival in 2009. She also contributed to The Children's Monologues, which used stories from children in South Africa.

In 2019, Zawe published her first book, Character Breakdown. It's a fictional story based on her experiences as an actress. In July 2021, she became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. This is an honor for writers.

Other Projects and Work

Zawe Ashton has also done voice-over work. She has narrated episodes of 24 Hours in Police Custody for Channel 4. In 2017, she narrated a documentary called Public Enemies: Jay-Z vs Kanye.

In 2017, Zawe hosted the third series of Random Acts. This Channel 4 show features short films. She also directed a film for the show, in which she played the main character.

Zawe Ashton's Personal Life

Zawe Ashton is engaged to actor Tom Hiddleston. They acted together in the play Betrayal in 2018 and 2019. They welcomed their first child in 2022.
