Zenwalk (also known as Zenwalk Linux) is a special type of Linux distribution. It was created by Jean-Philippe Guillemin. Zenwalk started out based on another system called Slackware. Over time, it changed a lot, becoming very different. However, it can still use many of Slackware's programs. Zenwalk aims to be a useful Linux system for many things. It focuses on programs for the internet, playing media like music and videos, and tools for computer programming.

What Zenwalk Linux Aims to Do
The Zenwalk Project wants to make a Linux operating system that works well on older or slower computers. It does this by using the newest software that is also very stable. Zenwalk is also made to work super fast on specific computer parts (called a processor architecture). It also has a powerful system for managing software packages. This system helps make sure all the parts a program needs are there.
Different Versions of Zenwalk
There are a few main versions of Zenwalk, each made for different uses:
Zenwalk: The Full Version
Zenwalk is the complete version, designed for everyday computer use. It's meant to be your main operating system. You install it directly onto your computer's hard drive. This version includes all the official software that is most helpful for common tasks. The programs included might change with each new release.
Zenwalk Core: For Custom Builds
Zenwalk Core is a smaller version of Zenwalk. It's made for people who like to build their own custom computer systems. This version doesn't include the graphical parts of the system (called X Window System). This lets skilled users create a system exactly how they want it. Emmanuel Bailleul is the main developer for this project.
ZenLive: The Live CD Version
ZenLive is a Zenwalk system that runs from a Live CD. This means you can try it out without installing it on your computer. ZenLive stays very similar to the full Zenwalk system. It also includes all the tools needed to create and build software. This is a special feature that many Live CD systems don't have.
Zenserver: For Servers
Zenserver is a version of Zenwalk Core made especially for computer servers. Its main goals are to be safe, dependable, easy to use, and easy to set up. It's designed to be a strong and reliable server operating system, following the best traditions of Zenwalk. Teran McKinney leads the team developing this version.
Other Systems Based on Zenwalk
Some other computer systems have been built using Zenwalk as their base:
- Arudius: This is a Linux Live CD system. It helps with computer security and has tools to test for weaknesses.
- Zeee: This version of Zenwalk was made specifically for the ASUS Eee PC, a type of small laptop.
