This means it is a special area defined by the government for counting people. In 2020, about 679 people lived there. Before 2010, Zephyr Cove was part of a larger area called Zephyr Cove–Round Hill Village.

Exploring the History of Zephyr Cove

Before Zephyr Cove became a settlement, the Washoe people, a Native American tribe, lived around this beautiful area. They were the first to call this place home.

When Did Zephyr Cove Begin?

The first European-American explorers to visit the area were Kit Carson and John Fremont in 1844. They were exploring the western United States.

In 1862, Anglo-American settlers started to build homes and live in the community. They decided to name the area Zephyr Cove. This name came from the Washoe Zephyr, which is a special wind that blows across Lake Tahoe.

A post office opened in Zephyr Cove in 1930. The name of the post office helped make "Zephyr Cove" a popular term. Soon, it became the official name for the entire community.

Where is Zephyr Cove Located?

Zephyr Cove is found on the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe is a very large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The community covers an area of about 5.8 square kilometers (2.25 square miles). Most of this area, about 5.5 square kilometers (2.12 square miles), is land. The rest, about 0.3 square kilometers (0.12 square miles), is water.

Schools that Served the Community

Kingsbury Middle School used to be in Zephyr Cove. It was a school for students in grades 6 to 8. This school was part of the Douglas County School District. However, the number of students in the area decreased. Because of this, the school closed in 2008. The property was later put up for sale in 2012.

After Kingsbury Middle School closed, students went to other local schools. These included Zephyr Cove Elementary School and George Whittell High School.

Zephyr Cove also has a public library. This library is a branch of the Douglas County Public Library system. It provides books and resources for everyone in the community.
